GREAT SEASON!!!!
In an epic battle as #5 smashed into #9 for the Regional crown. Both The Demons (18-4) and WI. Heights (19-4) used the #1 pitcher the day before to make the Championship game. Sadly one team would have to go home at this stage of the tournament. Unable to use ace Mike Hommen on the mound the Demon offense knew the game rested on their shoulders. The Demons came out red hot! Mike Hommen lead off with an infield hit. Wes Halverson and Cody Eilenfeldt had hits and Cody Wyman laced a line drive to knock in the third run of the inning. The Demons lead 3-0. Heights battled back to to take a 5-4 lead in the second inning. The Demons had several unusual errors in the inning on plays that they had mastered all season long. Ryan Schenkel belted his second Home Run in as many days giving Deerfield a 6-4 lead. Schenkel, with a broken foot and all pitched well keeping Heights in tact. In the top of the 4th, with a runner at first, Wyman belted a long 330 foot single that scored the runner from first making it 7-4. Heights in the 5th closed the gap to 7-5. The Demons offense then went to sleep giving Heights the chance to come back. In the bottom of the 6th the loss of G and all the Demons injuries finally caught up to them. The injured Schenkel gave everything he had and Tyler Brown came on to try and close out Wi. Heights but the momentum was too much and Heights took a 9-7 lead going into the 7th. Heights then brought in thier ACE pitcher who had one inning left to close out the Demons. Tyler Coffey lead off with a walk, followed by a failed bunt attempt. Tre Shaw then walked setting up the potential Demon rally. However Heights stopped the rally and the Demons season ended. I believe had the Demons been able to stay healthy that this team would have made it to Appleton.
With a week layoff the Demon bat were very quiet in the second round match up with rival Cambridge. The Demons ranked 9th in the state started Ace Mike Hommen with the hopes that the bats would come alive so that "Hummer" could be saved for the next round. The Demons had to win this round first. The Blue Jays took an early 1-0 lead on an error. Cambridge Ace Johnson kept the Demons off all night. After tieing the close battle 1-1, Ryan Schenkel scorched his first home run of the season in the 6th inning giving the Demons a 3-1 lead. Hommen closed out the Jays in the 7th giving Deerfield the narrow victory and a date with #5 ranked WI. Heights.
Regional Playoff Deerfield ranked #2 in bracket will host winner of Waterloo/Cambridge . The Demons earlier this season defeated Cambridge in a contest where Cody Eilenfeld and Cody Wyman were out with injuries. The Demons #2 Pitcher Garrett Borgrud was injured and lost for the season. Waterloo was one of the Demons three loss this season on the last play of the year where Eilenfeldt fractured his wrist. #1 in the bracket is Division 3's 5th rated Wisconsin Heights. Go to the link page to see the bracket.
It is over the Demons (17-3) Clinched the outright CHAMPIONSHIP defeating a tough offensive powerhouse Hustisford/Dodgeland 14-10 in 8 innings. The Demons had an 9-4 lead when Hustisford battled back in the bottom of the 7th making it 10-10. With the winning runner in scoring position and another at first H/D looked positioned for the upset. A sharp ground ball to short (Brown) a quick flip to second (Coffey) who threw to 1st but in the dirt. Cody Wyman lay on the ground at first as the winning run was about to come around, the Ump ran over to see where the ball was and called the out (double play!). Cody had the ball. With a vocal and excited Hustisford crowd looking to gain a share of the title the Demons showed why they are the champions coming back with 4 runs in the top of the 8th. Ace Mike Hommen(10-1-1) completed the game and finished with 8K's.! Hitting stars included Hommen 2-4 and RBI, Ryan Schenkel 2-5, double and 2 RBI, Tlyer Brown 2-5 and 2 RBI, Cody Eilenfeldt 3-5, double and 2 RBI, Tre Shaw and Wes Halverson each had a hit and knocked in 2 runs, Wyman also collected a hit with two runs.
H/D Nespaper article on the Demons Championship GAME!
The Demons with a chance to clinch the outright CHAMPIONSHIP lost to the 3-9 Fired up RIO club 6-5 on a windy cold night. A very tense Deerfield club came out flat as RIO put up 4 runs in the first inning and added two more in the second. The Demons battled back like a true Champ on a rocket to left by Tyler Brown for a double ( would have been HR if not for the strong wind) knocking in two runs. Tre Shaw continued his hot hitting (2-3) knocking in two runs getting the Demons with in a run at 6-5. Deerfield would load the bases in the bottom of the 6th but could not score. In the 7th the first two batters went down. Cody Wyman then hit a shot that the wind blew down ( looked to be a double) for a hit and reached 2nd as the ball rolled (called error). The Demons then tried a bunt but Rio was ready and the game was over.
Deerfield CLINCH TIE for the TILTE!! With the victory over Williams Bay (0-14) the Demons (16-2), Deerfield can be no worse then CO-Champions in the South Trailway. The Demons beat the winless Bulldogs 11-1 in 5 innings. Nick Saunders (1-0) in his first start picked up the win. Saunders also went 2-2 at the plate while knocking in three runs. Tre Shaw once again was hot at the plate going two for 3 with an RBI, Cody Wyman (1-3) knocked in two runs in the first inning providing a 5-2 lead after 1. Tyler Brown came out of his mini slum going 2-3 with a double and two RBI, Tyler Coffey was 1-2, Mike Hommen 1-2, Shawn Taylor was 1-2 and Cody Eilenfeld was 1-3 with a double and RBI.
GAME OF THE YEAR so far. A very talented SouthEast Wisconsin Christian Homeschool team came to do battle with the Demons. The Saints took a 1-0 lead after the first inning off of starter Tyler Brown. The Demons came back strong on the Saints scoring 6 runs in the top of the second. Cody Eilenfeldt (3-4) belted in 4 runs as Deerfield batted around the order. In a game that looked to be a blow out after 2 innings, caught fire. The Saints trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth scored to make it 6-4. The Saints "big" pitcher then belted a three run shot to take the lead 7-6. After a scorless 5th inning, the Demons battled back in the 6th. Wes Halverson (1-2) smacked in a run to tie the game. Cody Wyman (1-3) with the squeeze on bunted a perfect ball scoring two runs. Tre Shaw cleaned up the 4th run with a solid base hit. With the ace Mike Hommen on the mound leading 10-7 the game looked to be in hand. The Saints however came back scoring two runs closing to 10-9. Then with runners at second and third and two out the Saints grounded to SS (Brown) who had the umpire in his path and could not get rid of the ball. Brown then delivered the pitch fork to the Saints as he fired a rocket to Wyman at 1st just nipping the runner for the win.
With Schenkel sidelined the Demons (14-2) still managed to 10 run Fall River. The Demons behind ace Mike Hommen's (8-1-1) 2 hit shutout won the 12th straight game. leading 1-0, Deerfield had a base running error the ended a potential big first inning. However, The Demons broke open the game in the second. Cody Wyman (1-3) lead off the second with a line shot. On a hit and run, Tyler Coffey delivered a base hit. Wyman and Coffey then performed a double steal. Nick Saunders (2-3) then poked a base hit to right knocking in the two runners. Tre Shaw (1-3) also delivered a line shot scoring two runs. Cody Eilenfeldt also collected a base hit in the contest. The Demons have a two game lead in the Trailway South Division with three confrence games remaining.
Comment: The Demons are on a roll. Even with all the injuries, Deerfield continues to win. This is due to many factors but you have to point to the coach Tom Davey. Coach seems to move the chess pieces into the right spot when it looks like trouble. The Demons lost the number 2 pitcher "G" early in the season, Cody Eilenfeldt is playing with a fractured wrist, Cody Wyman had a sprained wrist for the first half of the season, Ryan Schenkel is playing with a broken bone in his foot, Cody Farnsworth needs surgery, Kyler Johnson has missed a few games (Ill) and Mason Lund has been out of the line up. Davey some how figures a way to keep the Demons rolling. Moving Wyman to First opened up Johnson playing time and the playing of Shane Taylor, Tyler Coffey have proven to be great moves. The dominant play of Wes Halverson and Tre Shaw along with Mike Hommen and the rest of the seniors has been big. Hopefully Davey has more tricks up his sleeves with Ryan's injury as it is another blow to the piching staff.
Dominant!! The Demons keep rolling (13-2) as they crush Johnson Creek 11-4. The injury bug continues to stay around and this time it was Ryan Schenkel. Ryan broke a bone in his foot but continued to play going 2-3 with 2 RBI. Ryan belted a 355 foot single as it just missed the fence. Mike Hommen went 2-5 but did find the fence as he hit his league leading 4th HOME RUN of the season. Mike also pitched a complete game while recording 12K's! Hommen recorded his 7th victory of the season! (7-1-1). The top Deerfield offense posted some big numbers, Cody Eilenfeldt was 2-5 with two RBI, Cody Wyman ripped the ball going 2-5 with an RBI and stolen base, Shane Taylor with his first start was 2-4. Nick Saunders knocked in a run going 1-4, Tre Shaw continued to impress (1-5). Dr. Smooth once again proved that you cannot get him out going 1-1 while continuing to lead the league in batting average. Next up is a battle with Fall River. If the Demons win they clinch at least a tie for the Trailways South title.
Game 14: LET THE PARDEE START. The Demons (12-2) cooled off Hot hitting Pardeeville (7-5) 11-0. Tre Shaw stared in the game with a bases loaded triple clearing the bases. Tre again delivered late in the game with a towering shot to the right field fence. Dr. Smooth delivered as he has all year (Wes Halverson) with two big hits. Wes opened the scoring with a solid double in the first inning. Mike Hommen shut out Pardeeville for a complete game victory as the Demons 10 ran the second place bulldogs in 5 innings.
Game 13: Show down for the league lead. Hustisford/Dodgeland had been talking smack about unseatting the pre-season pick but the Demons showed who was boss. After Ace Mike Hommen shut down HD 1-2-3 in the first inning the Demons (11-2) came out strong. Mike Hommen walked to start the game, Dr. Smooth Wes Halverson stroked a double scoring Hommen. Cody Wyman with two on sliced one to right scoring both runs and Deerfield lead 3-0. Deerfield leading 3-1 took a 4-2 lead after a Mike Hommen Home Run to right center. Ryan Schenkel (2-3) made it 5-3 after knocking in a run. With a close game at hand in the bottom of the 6th inning The Demons had two on with two out and Hot hitting Schenkel coming up. H/D decided to give a free pass to Ryan to face Wyman. H/D Trying to get the out and the momentum with the top of the order due up in the 7th. That strategy back fired as Wyman hit one in the hole at short where there was no play, Deerfield lead 6-3. Kyler Johnson then followed with a shot up the middle that hit the pitcher's rubber, Demons lead 7-3. Mason Lund next hit a sharp ball to short but the first baseman dropped the ball making it 8-3. Tre Shaw then finished H/D off with a shot to right field knocking in two runs. The Demons nailed the victory 10-3. Next up is Pardeeville who on Thursday night defeated Husitisford/Dodgeland 5-2 tieing them for second place and giving the Demons a two game lead in the Trailways South title chase.
